The Qur’an is a timeless book. It is just as relevant to us today as it was to the first generation of Muslims at the time of its revelation. It’s a means to our salvation and also the only means available to us to develop a personal relationship with our Creator.
And a question arises here…
Is it possible to develop that personal relationship without the knowledge of the Arabic language – the language it was revealed in??? Can a translation help achieve that personal experience??
It’s common knowledge that certain meanings, subtle nuances and much more is lost in works of translation. The same applies to the Quran. Unlike any other literary work, in the case of the Quran, the translation is man’s understanding of Allah’s word and the original is Allah’s word itself. The two can never be the same. After all the language it is one on of the miracles of the Quran.
Translation fails to answer questions like
Why are different names such as القارعة , الحاقة , الطامة given to the same day? What is the significance of the different word usages?
Questions like these or even more complex ones cannot remain unanswered. Especially, the times we are living in, require a deeper engagement with the Quran and call for a better understanding of its message.
Knowledge of Classical Arabic is necessary not only to find access to the Quran in it’s original language but also to understand it’s message in order to enhance our spirituality and character. Many companions (May the peace and blessings of Allah SWT be on all of them) embraced Islam because they were simply mesmerized by it’s recitation and recognized that cannot be the work of a man.
Let’s take a step towards building that relationship with the Quran while experiencing it’s beauty and ability to transform even the most harsh.
